  1. What is it about both Beat poetry and rap that has provoked censorship?

Both beat poetry and rap are stages and or platforms that serious issues are casually spoken and or rapped about, issues that are disregarded and overlooked by people of power: politicians, the government.Personal opinions are shown which are commonly the 'public's' opinion - what everyone is thinking but do not and cannot say. Both beat and rap are often censored as they subtly attack government and societal issues that are not being dealt with - it makes power look bad and so it becomes an offensive obscenity that nobody should be allowed to publicise or protest of.''America when will you send your eggs to India?'' (Ginsberg, 1956). This line shows America to be greedy, something they do not want people to hear nor think of the possibility that it could be true. ''Let the president answer on high anarchy Strap him with AK-47, let him go Fight his own war, let him impress daddy that way No more blood for oil.'' (Eminem, 2004). 'Mosh' retaliates at the president, showing what the public think he has done to the thousands of troops deployed and that he should have a taste of his own medicine - to see what its like fighting a war everyday and basically putting yourself up to be killed. Eminem argues the basis of how its so easy for Bush to send troops away to recover the work of the already thousands fallen. Again an attack on government and power is not considered appropriate, makes them feel awkward and so it is censored for its profanities and underlying meanings that could potentially have negative impact on society - a simple cover up.

    1. Hi Jazz,

I like how you mentioned Eminem as he is definitely a beat poet. Beat Poetry is still seen today - over 70years as being offensive and attacking on society. However I think more people are aware today of the messages that beat poetry presents than in the past. The song "Mosh" by Eminem was specifically written for the 2004 presidential campaign between Bush and Kerry as Eminem wanted to bring out the message to not vote for Bush as he sends troops into Iraq to get killed whereas Kerry promised to bring them back.

  2. What is ‘Beat’ poetry ?

"It seems to me that beat poetry is based on the direct use, or misuse, of the poet's own excitment on the discovering this identity, this charge." (Moore, 1958.
One of the most famous beat poets is Irwin Allen Ginsber who is best known for his poem "Howl". Ginsber was a leading figure of beat poetry / beat generation. Beat generation was created by Kerouac which was a form of expression but during the time poet's were seen as more known as activists and hippies during which there was repression from the American government so the name "beat" came from beaten down. The poems written like "Howl" were used to show a form of expression. Unfortunately as the works were controversial it was seen as being non - conformity and was seen very negatively. Another famous beat poet is McGahey who used the expression "crucifix " as a metaphor of religious identification. So what we know is that beat poety is not beat - as in a musical beat but as beaten down to conformity and society and that rebels from the 40s onwards expressed this through poetry.
